I have a macbook pro and an airport extreme, I want to be able to wirelessly play music through my stereo. I know that an airport express would work but I find it hard to shell out $100 just not to have a chord

are there any other cheap options?

The airport express works pretty well - but you also have to shell out even more if you want to listen to anything other than iTunes. That is - you can only play itunes music through the Airport Express unless you get something like Airfoil - which does work well but that is even more money.
Rogue Amoeba | Airfoil for Mac: Wireless Audio Around Your House

There are a few bluetooth bridges - I bought this one
Motorola DC800 - Bluetooth wireless audio transmitter
I think I bought it at Best Buy in the clearance bin for $20
But if you look at the Amazon page for example - you'll see other bluetooth bridges.

There are also a myriad of ethernet to audio converters (or media converters) out there but they don't seem that much cheaper than an Airport Express. The Airport Express also acts a USB printer hub and a Range Extender.
