Ok, so I got this new internet connection, but instead of automatic PPP it uses the TCP/IP settings.

I can't connect to the internet with my dsl now, without putting in the settings I guess. I put in the ip address, but on my pc it asks for all of this:

IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default gateway:

Preferred DNS server:
Alternate DNS server:

Now, all I see in the iBook settings for the TCP/Ip is ip address and Subnet mask, but it won't let me put anything in subnet mask, bc there is no box beside to put anything there.

What am I suppose to do?

I'm thinking it's DSL. You wouldn't know the provider because, they're no major company. It's a small provider only used down here, because we're a small town and it's ran by the city, so I wouldn't know.

Just to be sure, which OS? Panther? Tiger? There might be some differences. Does that ISP connect automatically or do you need to run a PPPoE Dialer to log in? That is the reason I asked the ISP so I could maybe figure it out. If it's Panther or Tiger I can check real fast.

I take it you have the settings on the PC and it works correct?

It's neither. It's 10.1, I haven't upgraded yet.

My older connection was automatic, like all I did was plug in the ethernet cable and it connected right up, this one, I have to type in the ip address and all the network settings, and it won't let me type in the subnet mask.

BRB then. Let me boot up my old G4 with 10.2. that should be closer. Tiger is a bit different.

OK, first click Networking which I am sure you already did. Be sure you are on Built In Ethernet and not the modem. Select the TCP/IP Tab. Click on the setting for Manual. Put in the IP Address and Subnet Mask and on 10.2 it's the Router area where you put in the Default Gateway. If you do not see what I am seeing here let me know and I will try to help you more.

Any Luck? Make sure it's set to Manual and not DHCP or any other setting.

Not a Problem. Glad I could help. Never worked with 10.1 but figured it might be close to 10.2.

Yeah, I never thought to put it on built in ethernet instead of modem, so thats why it wasn't letting me type in the subnet mask and router.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get Tiger soon. do you think it would run ok on a g3?

640mb
30gb
600mhz

those are my specs.

It should run ok. That Imac must have Firewire. That is one thing Tiger wants. Otherwise it should run pretty well. You just won't see some of the special effects, but I have heard that Tiger runs faster on older machines like Panther did over Jaguar.
