I tried a few things; restarting plugged in and unplugged; trying different ports. I ran the disk utility, and tried to verify here's what I got:

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume could not be repaired because of an error.

First Aid failed as well
Any ideas?

Have you done this from the Disk Utility on your install disc? You need to do it this way for it to work.

Kevriano:

The disk is external so he should be able to perform all the necessary checks right from Disk Utility rather than rebooting and using his install media.

To doughboy:

Unless you have critical data on that drive, you may be forced to try an erase and re-format. Not sure if that will work either especially if the disk is defective.

Regards.

Ah, right, well I always thought/felt it better to use the install disc. No worries.

And it is always better to use Disk Utility from the internal HDD on an external as often Disk Utility has been updated since the install discs were manufactured. Sure looks like you have a dead external drive there.
