Switch from g to b?

I have a recently purchased powerbook with the newest wireless card, extreme, and have noticed in some areas I get far inferior wireless internet reception, on a colllege campus, than other students with 802.11b cards. I read that this is due to the fact that .g cards only get optimum reception 1/3 the distance of .b cards. Is there anyway to "switch" my card to .b? I can definitely lose the extra bandwidth sometimes when it is DEFINITELY not needed. Thanks!

There is no way to switch it..G operates at up to 50 ft and then the remaining 100 ft it operates at the B speeds
