Copy protection thrown out (in France)

A French court has ruled that DVD copy protection violates the consumer's rights. Specifically, preventing an owner from making copies for his private use is not legal under French law or (apparently) the consumer protection laws of most EU countries; http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050426/D89NBP580.html. On the other hand, the Canadian industry group CRIA has appealed the recent ruling that allows Canadians to post music to internet accessable directories.

It is almost a certainty that the U.S. will not. DRM is an attempt to slow the copying of copyrighted works without the copyright owners permission. The removal of DRM will not cause the masses to develop a conscience. DRM did little to slow p2pers either though.
