hi,

im looking for the best DVD Burner for my G4/800. I tried the NEC 1300 and the Sony DRU-510A, but was rather disappointed.
The NEC would only burn 2x and the SONY just 1x. Even after successful simulation (in Toast 5.2.1 or 6) they wont speed up.
So now im interested in your opinion....

If you have a PC get the PIONEER DVR-105(OEM version), and get the 1.33 firmware update through installing it in the PC.

Then install it in the MAC. You have to get 4X DVD-R media, but it'll do it. Not much of a speed increase over 2X though, but you'll notice it.

I have the DVR-104. It is a DVD-RW. Last SuperDrive I've seen that is DVD-RW. Most of 'em are DVD-R's now-a-days. Don't know why they dropped the RW's, but it is the best drive. I can burn movies, watch'em, if I don't like 'em, I erase the DVD and start over :) DVD's are expensive still these days. I have 3 DVD-RW's and I just use them over and over until I find something I want to keep and then burn it to DVD-R. Pretty cool...

I had to ditch a Pioneer 105 R (external) because it wouldn't deal with modern disk media. I bought a Pioneer 112D, and then a 115D, both external, both of which work fine with a G4/1.25/firewire. The internal optical drive on my G4 eMac 1.25 is a Sony CD-RW CRX315E, so that won't work for dvd's.

The 'external' bit doesn't matter, since the optical drive case dimensions for PPC Macs is the same, ie. the drive inside is the same for external and internal.

Go for Pioneer!

Hugh, why are you responding to a post that's 7 years old? Is there something missing here?

Regards.

Because it appeared well up the list, on Page 1 as far as I recall, of entries in OHAP. I suspect a recent post has been edited out. Unless I somehow clicked an earlier page number in error.

Thanks for the notification. Feel free to remove both my and your recent (2010) entries.

Not a problem, just thought maybe I might have missed something. Your advice is on target and certainly still relevant.

Regards.
