Hey everyone... I am trying to figure out this problem. I backed up all my fiancee's data to a SATA drive that i had popped into an external reader... the drive has become damaged and now it won't mount. One of the connectors on the drive was bent... I bent it back in and tried to connect it with no luck...

what are possible ways of resolving this issue? She needs the data.

If you can find an otherwise identical drive, you might be able to swap circuit boards on the drive itself.

That's what I was thinking... except... it wouldn't work Hitachi to Seagate, would it? They're both 160GB SATAs at 7200rpm...

No, they have to be exactly identical, down to the model number and revision.

Alright, so in other words, find another hitachi drive...

any other options?

Well, you could send it out to a drive recovery service, but be prepared to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

I have done it with a 100% identical drive, so it is possible. You are never out of luck, there is a duplicate out there. What are the exact specs of the drive? If this does not work out you have the data recovery option as noted above, but like cwa107 pointed out it will cost. You need to determine what the data is worth to you.

Yea haha. How much money is it worth to get her pics and resume back... the resume probably quite a bit. She worked on it for a long time and is much more accomplished than I am.

I guess it comes down to how much cash not having to deal with yelling and hatred of me is worth. Then again, I did just lose my job for no f'ing reason. So... The scales come out. Maybe I'll try to find an exact drive.

How did it get damaged btw? Just so you don't go chasing down an identical drive to see that the drive is in fact destroyed :-/
