Open Dashboard - click on and move the widget - don't release the button yet - close Dashboard - now release the button.

Only problem is that it sits on top of all other windows.

To put it back in Dashboard - click on and move the widget - open Dashboard - release the button

How do you close the Dashboard when you're holding down the widget?

Oneironaut: depends on your keyboard layout - try F12. No? Check System Preferences>Keyboard&Mouse for shortcut.

bobtomay: this method not working in Snow Leopard

?? - It's working in my Snow Leopard.

F12 works to open and close it in my snow leopard but when I click and drag a little bit keep holding down and press F12 again it just disappears with the rest of dash board.

For those where it's not working and you did the upgrade to SL, I'd try deleting the dashboard preference file - move it to your desktop, log out and back in - Located at:

Users / your user / Libraray / Preferences / com.Apple.dashboard.plist

(Not the dashboard.client file)

Then I'd try a repair permissions - seen it fix some strange things lately.

So when this is completed your widget will sit on top of any other windows you open?

yep, it doesn't sit in the background on the desktop. It remains the foremost item.

Or you could just use the Yahoo! Widget Engine.
That way, you can have as many widgets on your desktop as you like.

There are many widgets that are the same as or come close to matching the ones available for Dashboard.

But do they also use up as much RAM as Dashboard? :p

bobtomay: I deleted my .plist file and logged out/in. Didn't bother with permissions. Same problem, plus regret for resetting my Dashboard to stock. Luckily, I don't really want this functionality. I was just geeking out, that's all.

Now restoring my custom Dashboard by putting back my .plist file from the Trash...

F4 opens/closes Dashboard for me. It has the meter symbol on it. It's the same on my MacBook and my wireless keyboard.
