Share Files Between Mac and Ubuntu

Hello, I am trying to share files across my network and am running into problems.

I can see my ubuntu box and get into my shared folder from my mac, but I run into problems writing files to this folder. I get this error:

'You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named "<filename>"'

Can anyone help?

How are you sharing the files? FTP? NFS? SMB? Does your user have write permissions?
