Hello one and all

I have just bought a G5 1.6Ghz tower that had no hard drive in it
I have just put a non formatted 80 GB hard drive in to the machine.
Now I am trying to boot mac OSX 10.4.6 from an Lacie DVD external Fire wire drive with no success.

I've tried holding down command-option-shift-delete.
This is the procedure I used on my old G4 before it died
any suggestions much apperiated.

Is the DVD drive working on the G5? Simply pop it in, reboot and hold down the 'C' button after the chime, ** to Utilities, select Disk Utility, run Repair Disk and then format Mac OS Extended (Journalled)

If the machine DVD is not working try the same format to boot from the external optical drive.

Firstly thanks harryb2448 for the reply

Had another go yet no sign of life
It comes up with a completely black screen with the light in the bottom
right corner flashing in unison with the little light above the on button
on the tower.
I haven't heard any sound come from the computer yet it starts quiet
then the fans slowly come on and it does pump a fair bit of air through
itself.

I'm differently feeling frustrated
I would like to have another go at flash the G3 I had at the time just didn't have the power.

Thanks

Gotta say machines sold without HDD are usually good for parts only. Does the machine have any memory installed, and is it in matched pairs? Next suggestion is the logic board has died.

All is well :)
I took it back to the seller he assured me it was going and that he
took the original hard drive out anyway all that was wrong was that
the memory wasn't contacting properly or a bit dirty.

Took the memory out put it back in a couple of times then she started
and is going strong.

Only problem now is that all my web software is in OS 9
I've got 10.4.11 installed on the computer but can't work out how to
install The System folder so as to install OS 9.2.2

I had the hard drive out of the G5 and in my G4 933 with an adapter as its a Sata drive trying to boot in OS 9 and install with no luck.

Any ideas?

Well to get Classic to install, you had to select the 'Install OS 9 Drivers?' at the time of formatting. Can you remember ticking the box, and if so should just boot from the OS 9.1 or later disc.

If drivers are not installed and you definitely need Classic, looks like a reformat of the drive and fresh install.

Thanks for your posts harryb2448

I manage to get a CD that loads OS 9 over the top of OSX so finally she's up
and running and I can now work on the site.

Again thanks
