Icons on desktop

Ok so I downloaded firefox, utorrent and limewire and i put them in my dock, now even when I exited them I still have these icons on my desktop below my HD icon that I can "eject" whats up with them?

The icons on your desktop are virtual disk images. This is how you "install" something to OS X.

1) Download the DMG (Disk Image) file from somewhere
2) Mount it to your desktop as a virtual CD
3) Drag the app to /Applications
4) Eject the disk image
5) Drag app to dock (From /Applications) if desired.
