Ok so me and my brother in law were up stairs playing a video game and all of a sudden my PC went POP and we saw a flash of white light.

So we tried to turn the computer on and well it doesn't get any power. Can someone tell me what died?

Did my power supply unit just croak?

Way... way too many specs to list.
That'd be my first guess. But it really is just that, a guess. Also probably the cheapest option too.

I agree with Dysfunction. Sounds like the Power Supply blew. I have seen even flames come out the back at one friend place one night. Quite scary for sure as there were VERY flammable drapes not far behind the opening for the power supply fan where it came from!

I just hope if the PS did die it did not blow anything else. I had one die here with smoke and a LOUD bang and it took out the motherboard, the IDE controller on both hard drives, and a couple of other things.

That is my first guess though and like was already said the cheapest and easiest thing to replace overall.

Do you keep your PC on the floor or elevated on the desk? You might want to take a look at the power-supply vent and see if it's all covered with dust and so on. If it is, it's possible that it caused the failure either through overheating or because of some debris..

But as others have said, if the PS took itself out without damaging anything else, it's easy to fix and get up and running again..

Yeah, certainly sounds like the PSU went pop....best thing to do is find a loaner supply to put into the case and see if the tower will fire up, if it does with the loaner in there, go out and spend some cash and get a quality power supply, trust me been there done that with cheap power supplies, they just don't last like say an Antec or PC Power & Cooling supplies do.
