disk images on the home page....

So i'm not really a new mac user but this is a newbie question....
So when i've downloaded things from the internet (i.e. vlc, shiira, etc) the disk image that i needed to install them from stays on the desktop and if i drop it into the trash it closes out the program. my question is, is there a way to have the program open with out that open.... many thank yous

Yes.
You can actually install the application you have downloaded by dragging the application to your hard drive.
A good place to put it would be in the Applications folder.
