I re-installed 0SX 10.2 from CD and now exits to Darwin after OSX login, where I login again and am in Darwin Console "Welcome to Darwin". I have seen this in a couple of threads, but no resolution.

Look at the tail end of your system.log, and you should be able to find the problem. But... you said you're working on a fresh install off CD? Doesn't make any sense that loginwindow would crash.

What happens if you type exit in the terminal? Can you paste in a post the list that results when you type top ? Mine (a bit of it) looks like this:
