External HDD and iMovie

Hello all,
I'm new to this site, but have been reading posts all morning. I just bought a MiniDV camera (sony HC-30) and am concerned that the 16GB left on my iMac won't handle the files I'm about to give it.
So, an external HDD is the obvious answer.
But, will I be able to edit the movies using iMovie from the external drive or will I only be able to use the drive as storage?

Thanks for any advice.

if its usb2 or firewire, you can work from it.
