How well does your machine function when you have an ethernet connection?

Regards.

at home, right next to a linksys wireless router it works well, in a coffee shop right next to the wireless router, no problems, it seems that if i get further away then 6 feet from the router it has problems?

would be nice if i could get a strong signal from 40 feet away.

That may indicate your airport card is not performing as it should. Have you had any repairs done to your MacBook over the course of time you've had it?

Reason I ask is that sometimes when replacing a display or other components, the airport antenna wires are inadvertently moved out of place. The correct placement of the antenna wires is critical for reception. (The antenna wires are located behind the display assembly on the top lid.)

Regards.

I agree with chscag. Almost sounds like your antennas aren't connected or properly connected. I've never experienced such short range with either of my MacBook Pros and they are rumored to be hampered by the aluminum casing.

Just out of curiosity have you tried taking it to an Apple store sometimes they
will surprise you with a free fix depending on the situation or at least thats
been my experience.

Also, you really shouldn't be prying apart the display to troubleshoot an antenna problem. Sure, the antennas are routed in that area, but the most common point of failure is where they connect to the wireless adapter itself, which is in the main part of the case, beneath the keyboard.
