This is my very 1st Mac and I love it! The only problem is that the drive that came with the mac doesnt work. I put in a cd and nothing! I was looking into getting an external cd/dvd burner. But I wanted to know other options. Are the internal ones easy to install? Which one would be best for me! Pleas help. I have an eMac.
This is one i was thinking about getting.

I do not recommend attempting to replace the CD drive yourself unless you have the technical skills to do so. Here's a step by step you can look at to see how involved it is. This link.

Pioneer = good choice. The 116D is the latest in the ATA category. I too have an eMac and I've connected two Pioneer external firewire drives, a 112D in a Devideon enclosure, and a 115D in a LaCie. Both work well.

You don't absolutely need to buy the very latest enclosure for an external optical drive, but if you do, get one with the Oxford chipset. OWC Find the latest Performance Upgrades, Firewire and USB Hard Drives, SATA, Memory, Laptop Battery, and more at OWC generally advertises which chipset is in the enclosures they sell.

If budget cost is a consideration, you can hook up a bare optical drive to your eMac with a USB-ATA adaptor. About $US20, but you may have hassles burning disks.

chsag is right when he says "involved" - I'd go further and say it's atrociously difficult to replace drives in an eMac. Even experienced Mac techs blanch when they see an eMac approaching.
