I just bought a SanDisk ExpressCard Media Card Reader for my MacBook Pro and was wondering if it was necessary to remove it after each use or can I leave it in the notebook? Will it damage anything leaving it in?

I leave mine in all the time and have never had a problem.

If it somehow snapped off then it might be a problem, but that's probably not the question you were asking ;P

Well, if it's anything like the Griffin 5-in-1 reader I use, nothing protrudes from the slot (although I'm aware that's not always the case).

It goes all the way in flush so there is nothing protruding to break off.
