VHS Transfer

I purchased a Pyro A/V Link and transferred a VHS tape into IMovie. I then burned with Toast a DVD. It came out horrible. It was much darker than the VHS tape. There doesn't seem any adjustments. Did I buy a piece of junk for $200? It was at least 50% worse than the tape.
I viewed the tape from the same VCR on a TV and it was much better so it isn't the VCR.
