Is it safe to always have an external HD plugged into the computer? Should I unplug it before I start it up or shut it down? Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you're using Time Machine you'll want to keep the external HDD plugged in and powered up at all times when the computer is on. If not, unplug the external when not using it. Regardless of whether an external drive is under use or not, it draws power from the USB port.

Regards.
