problem with iChat

so i just got my macbook a couple weeks ago, and this is my first thread ..(so please excuse my lack of Mac-knowledge:Grimmace: )

so on my Accounts, i created a .mac username, and then assumed that THAT username would be my iChat username ...but when i try to sign on to iChat it always says:

"Could not connect to Jabber ... Disconnected unexpectedly"

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated :)

MBP 15", 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.8.2, iPad 1, 80gb iPod, ATV 1, iPhone 5
To use iChat you need to have an AIM or AOL screen name and use that. Not sure of any others.

The .mac account is a domain you can use through apple to sync up all your apple products. In order to use Ichat you must already have a username and password through aol instant messenger.
