If the iPhone connects automatically to your wifi-network when you are at home, does that mean that your n-speed network will never be faster than g-speed when you are at home (and want to use your normal computers)?

It really depends on your router. Some n-based routers will degrade to 'g' or 'b' when configured to use something other than 'n'. Some will maintain the 'n' mode, even with a 'g' or 'n' device connected.

That is the case with the Apple Airport Extreme / Time Capsule. If you have B/G access enabled, it will slow down the entire network. A workaround (if you don't mind spending the money) is to get an Airport Express (or another router) and run it in bridge mode. You can then dedicate that router to the B/G devices and set the base station to "N" only.

Way... way too many specs to list.
I have an extreme and my transmit rates show well above wireless G with an intermix.

So the Airport Extreme (which I have) is one of those routers that should maintain the n-mode with g-devices attached?

Mine appears to. The only n device I have is my macbook pro right now. All the other devices are g and my transmit rate (when I'm not in my office, which has horrible reception thanks to 2 brick walls) averages between 130 and 150. Normally I have a wii, 2 thinkpads, a touch and a wireless desktop all connected via g.

How do you actually measure the speed in a reliable way?
