My friend has a Apton Book from MDG that is about 18 months old. Its a decent working computer running win xp media center edition but within the last while its been very very slow.

My friend knows the software side of things and has no viruses, spyware etc on his computer. He just leaves it running all the time (bad on the hard drive considering they only have a certain life expectancy).

It will display a error message every now and then saying "Unknown hard error" for no reason at all. He believes it to be his hard drive, I don't think it is (if you listen to his hard drive rev up, its fine, no clicking, no weird noises, nothing).

Anyone have any idea what this is?

Sounds like a HDD error to me also. Have your friend go to the maker of his hard drive's web site and download their free diagnostic software. Usually it can be burned to a CD and is bootable or a floppy if he has a floppy drive. Anyway, have him run the diagnostics tests provided.

Regards.

Is it remotely possible to get a screenshot of the desktop when this error comes up.....it'd be a good diagnostic tool for me to look at......might be able to assist.....
