Just found this site (http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html) that digs up birth-certificate info of any Mac when you paste in the serial number and hit Laat de informatie zein (the site's in the Netherlands).

I wonder how long I have before the hard drive goes south.

Apple sure cranked up the speed of the assembly line over the years. Only 180 were made the week mine was built, 1,261 for Louishen's and 27,780! in one week for dtravis7's.

Have you seen Charlie Chaplin's assembly-line scene in Modern Times?

China, India, or southeast Asia where labor is cheap. And this is across all technical and professional levels.

Is everything in the whole world made in China now?Everything would have been, except with rising wages in China well, India, but relatively speaking Romania (http://www.news.com/2100-1011_3-5074725.html) will be the next sweat-shop.

I was reading on another forum today that the serial# tells you interesting information on where you Mac was made and produced etc...

Go to this site
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html (you don't have to sign in)
It will tell you a little info such as the factory it was made at (just a code for a Shanghai factory) and the week it was manufactured and its number for that week and a few other details.

If you are lucky it might begin W8808
W8 factory in Shanghai
8=2008
08=week 8

I ordered my iMac 14 January 2008 and recieved it the next day on the 14th.
I find it hard to believe the Production year and Production week.

w8747 is the start of my serial#
Factory: W8 (Shanghai China)
Production year: 1997 (It's 2007) :o are you kidding
Production week: 47 (November)
Production number: 112 (within this week)

(the software I'm using to pull up dates does not distinguish between 199 and 200 as year prefixes, so what shows as 1997 is actually 2007)

My friend bought a iMac 2-3 weeks before me (same iMac except I got more RAM) and his serial starts with w8801 meaning his iMac is Production year = 2008, production week one January. Odd how I got mine after him, and is an older production model. I don't think this is right, I would of thought I'd get the newest iMac rather than picking a iMac from the back of the pile

I'd be interested to see what some of your 'newer' iMac serial# tells you from that site.
