Will an Apple TV work for me.
At this point I'm still an Apple newbie, but I am successfully using - 1) an iPad 2) a MacBook Pro and 3) am watching movies ordered from iTunes via my MBP on my Sony Bravia TV. Since I am 66 YO, I am pretty proud of my basically non technical ability to have done all of this in the past year.

OK, enough of that, I would like to now get an Apple TV. And this may seem like a stupid question but I have been unable to research an answer. I am unable to get a successful download of Adobe Flash to my MBP. Both Apple and Adobe have tried to help, no success, so I use Chrome for flash needs. This brings me (finally) to my question - can I get Netflix on Apple TV without having Flash on my MBP. I can't tell if the MBP is involved with my Apple TV use with my Sony TV. If you read thru this rambling question, thank you.

    Specs:
    15" MBP '06 2.33 C2D 4GB 10.7; 13" MBA '11 1.8 i7 4GB 10.10; 21" iMac '13 2.9 i5 8GB 10.10; 5s & 5c
The Apple TV (ATV) will get you Netflix and for Netflix, there is no relationship between it and your Mac - it will require a network connection. The ATV will also stream directly from your Mac running OSX 10.8 without a wired connection as long as you have it connected to your network.

If you want more try a Roku - get Netflix, Amazon, Vudu (where you get the highest resolution videos at the same price as iTunes HD pricing) and a whole lot more - but no iTunes.

The combination of both - ATV & Roku - makes for a great system especially if you're using an Audio/Video surround receiver for HDMI switching between devices. But perhaps get one at a time.

Thank you. Roku kinda confuses me tho, I am not sure why I would want that. And as far as sound, I have my TV set for external speakers and have an old Aiwa stereo system hooked to the audio input at the back of TV. Sounds awesome.

As far as what I want to achieve - I was so happy to get my connection between the MBP and TV to work via the mini display port to HDMI. But then am lazy and want to order something from itunes without having to move the MBP and connect it to TV (I know, the height of laziness). But then am also interested in getting more movies cheaper from Netflix. So I was thinking the Apple TV will accomplish both for me.

One very nice feature of the ATV3 is mirroring your late model iPhone,iPad and MBP wirelessly, very satisfied with mine and love the free podcasts.

ATV will do what you're looking for - Exactly why I ended up getting one - and it will connect to your existing network via either wired or wireless. No more need to get up out of the recliner to connect your computer.

Thank you so much. So to clarify - all Roku, Amazon or vodu would add is a higher resolution? Glad to see thou they dont seem to be required.

The Roku provides the ability to purchase content from a lot more providers than having iTunes only.

Vudu is only one of those content providers and is the service which currently has the highest available resolution streaming video.

There is a "great" number of additional streaming sites available on the Roku than the ATV - link - but, if you want iTunes and want to easily stream from your Mac, then you still need the Apple TV.

For what you specifically asked to do - the ATV will do that.

Might I suggest you start a thread in one of the Software forums regarding your issue with installing Flash?

I'm just saying you're thinking of spending $100 on an ATV when IMO, you've already accomplished the tough part - you already have the Mac connected to your TV.

    That's my 2 cents anyways...
