I have a 65" 1080HD TV that is not ready to be replaced any time soon. However, I really want to be able to put a new Apple TV 3 on it to take advantage of my whole new Media Center concept with a MacMini and iTunes and Airplay.

The TV will take Component, Composite and S-video. It also has a DVI connection as well. Would an HDMI-DVI converter (came with the MacMini) work? Or do I need to get a converter box to break down the HDMI to one of the others, like Amazon.com: HDMI to 5 RCA component AV Converter: Electronics

It seems to be pretty hit-or-miss on DVI. It can work, but the issue seems to often be with the TV itself. For example, does the TV handle HDCP? Some TVs seem to have issue with 1080i and opposed to 1080p. I was personally surprised at the number of stories where the DVI solution didn't work.

Then there's the issue of audio. If you're not using HDMI, you need to use the optical audio out port to send the audio to your TV (assuming it has an optical audio in) or your receiver.

    Good luck.

    Specs:
    iMac 27" Mid 2010, 3.2GHz Intel Core i3,12GB 1333 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD5670 512MB, Yose 10.10.5
What you could consider is a DVI with Audio to HDMI adaptor but they are expensive. You should also do some research on your TV with regards to it's current software/firmware versions and any updates that may be available.
    iMac 27-inch Mid 2010 (wow....that old...eeeks!), WD My Book 1TB Firewire,WD My Passport Air 500GB, Magic Mouse,Magic Trackpad,
    iPhone 5C, iPod Nano 4GB 3rd Gen, ATV2.
MOTM October 2012. These days normally happy with an occasional grumble.
