I would prefer one over a laptop for coffee shop surfing, emails, multimedia etc - just not for true work. Also having a stylus to make pointing easier could be good...

That's what I was trying to say though. Some people think Tablet as a laptop replacement or something while it really isn't and imo it shouldn't. I just want something with rather larger screen than iPhone but able to do whatever it does, maybe a bit faster and maybe slightly better.

I think the idea of a larger iTouch would be neat, I would embrace it but I think it would be better for a meeting or such so you can stream your data to it and have it setup facing the people your pitching to. Or have it in a meeting yet again so you can pull up contacts or the documents while your chatting to the boss and actually show him easily. However, I think it would not really catch onto this.
Just going to quote myself for this one. :)

Actually I dent to disagree with the above self quote. I think it would really be good as a meeting organiser or PDA. And I think it would catch on as that. But people would go "But I already own an iphone/ipod touch, and it can already store messages, calandar dates, send emails, surf the web etc and it's compact and a phone too. Why do I need another bugger device to do the same thing my iphone/ipod touch can do."

And my one worry if such a tablet was to be released. How would Apple market it and sell it as something other then an iphone with a stylus? If people want a little portable message organiser and the iphone is not enough they'll get the low end macbook. Cause it's cheap enough and realible enough for all the basic tasks.

The tablet's biggest issue is not what it will do or how it will work. As I'm sure Apple will make it brilliantly. The thing is it's niché. There was no iphone in the old newton days and that's why it was a hit. With the iphone being almost a newton 2.0 . . . well you all see what I am getting at here.

This is basically what I think about every time someone brings up the tablet idea. Of course minus the large phone onto the left sided, but a basic idea.

What if you are like me, you don't want to carry your laptop everywhere and find iPhone's screen waay too small for web browsing, playing games or viewing movies? That's why there are large screen PMPs for God's sake! But I don't only want a PMP. I want that tablet device to be compatible with other stuff and I want it to be powerful. So, 7-10 inch Tablet sounds just perfect. Very portable and has large screen.

I'd buy it..only if it had Mac OS X on it, or some Apple developed OS with Safari and some sort of widgets like feature.

Well, according to this from cnet.com, it's very possible we'll get a glimpse of the tablet next month.

Here's a quote from the article that addresses the OS mentioned by Chris H.

"My source says Apple's instructions to developers indicate that the tablet--or at least the thing it's showing off next month--will be based on the iPhone OS and will rely on the same iTunes Store that has moved 2 billion apps in a couple of years."

Assuming this will happen, the cost of the item will determine my decision to buy, weighing the cost in with practicality, how much the device will be used, and how easy it is to use. Since it will be a fairly nice size, and that companies will soon develope cases, pouches, or bags for it, I could have a case to protect it, then carry it around with me to school, maybe use TextEdit to type up notes, then use the school's Wi-Fi to gather more information at hand in class all at once.

Now I can see where the practicality comes in for me. Similar to iPod_Nano's thread about using the tablets for school, but for personal use.

Yes, I would definitely buy one in this case.

Ugh. Definitely a fake picture, too cluttered with apps.

I would buy in a heartbeat... it would replace
- my kindle
- PMP
- netbook

A 10 inch screen would make it about the same size as the kindle minus the keyboard. I could read books, magazines and newspapers on it without the bulk of a keyboard. Most of the time I dont need a keyboard because I am consuming information and media. I do write a few short emails.... but if I can type those on an iphone I can certainly manage on a tablet.

If I were a student I could read textbooks on it much more easily.

Wall Street professionals have to read a lot of research. A couple of my friends asked how the Kindle would display graphs etc and PDFs. They would like to read research on their 1 hour+ commutes. Such people are eagerly awaiting the "tablet."

However, I think it will be a niche product because of its price and lack of keyboard.

There are a million uses for it it seems, but there's a lot to keep anyone guessing. The latest I've heard is that it'll be here near the end of January.

Is it chained to a wireless service provider for connectivity outside the home, or is it WiFi/Bluetooth only? Is that service provider someone other than AT&T? What is the "unlocked" price, or will it require yet another subscription to purchase it and use all the features? Does it fit in my pocket? What does it do better than my laptop to justify toting a 10" "big iPhone" around instead of a 3" bigger full-Mac OS X laptop? Can it run full blown applications like Office or Virtual Box or just "Apps"? Can it run more than one application at a time or is it like the iPhone? I'm just failing to see the grand vision on this one and the appeal to someone like myself, who already owns a "smart" phone and a laptop. It will certainly be interesting to see what the "killer-feature" is on this one.

iPod Touch - Oh, sorry, did I say it wrong?

Anyway, I think a touchscreen Mac would be cool; something like this though, I can't imagine carrying around a large iPhone.

I think it will be cool but I will wait a bit to see how developers jump on and how it plays out for the consumer. If it does work as well as it is expected to (assuming it happens) then I will try and get my work to buy them for us. I just hope it interfaces with PC stuff.
