Question 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo speed question (HD QT playback seems slow)
Today I tried playing a 720p quicktime movie... And my system couldn't keep up at 24 fps. I was pushing about 15 frames per sec which doesn't seem right for the system specs.

I have the 17" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, with the Nvidia 8600 GPU, hi-res screen, 4 GB RAM, OS 10.5.1, fresh reboot, no other apps running except for a RAM/CPU meter in the menu bar. (Raging Menace - MenuMeters)

I tried removing Perian, just for kicks, but no change.

    This is the clip:
Star Trek trailers and video clips on Yahoo! Movies

There are links to hi-def versions under the embedded video.

Is something screwy, or is this normal hi def playback performance?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Specs:
    iMac late 2007 10.11.b4, iMac 2008 10.10.5, Macbook2007 10.7.5, Mac Mini 10.7.5, iPhone 3GS Note 8!!
I just played the 720P trailer of Star Trek 2008 and was at 24-25FPS on my iMac G5. Even my Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66Ghz is way faster playing HD than the iMac G5. It was smooth here on the G5 so something is not right. Did you let it finish downloading before playing it? If not my iMac G5 skipped all over the place which is normal. Be sure it's all downloaded before you play.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

The movie is saved to disk, so it isn't a streaming issue. At least now I am sure there IS something wrong, so I can look at fixing it.

Before I go nuts maybe I should try another file--just in case the one I got is screwed up somehow.

Have you tried a HD Movie from Apple Movie Trailers. Yahoo isn't the best site anyway. Oh i had no problem playing it on my MacBook 2.16GHz, 1GB Ram and GMA x3100 Intel Graphics Chip.

I just tried that... Wall*E trailer, 1080p, played fine. How strange.

Northy, when you tried the Trek clip, I assume you were looking at the rendered frame rate in the QT info window. But did the video LOOK smooth?

The Trek clip in SD (embedded on that page) plays smoothly. It's mostly in slow-mo but at full frame rate. In HD, my QT player claims it is playing at 24 fps, but to the eye it clearly is not playing as well as the SD version.

So, perhaps it's just an authoring problem with that clip. Hmm. I'll try it on a PC at work and see what happens.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Tried it on mine, even after fully downloaded, there were several scenes that appeared to be a little jerky to me. Playing rate at 24-25 fps.
I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
