Trouble resetting password PowerBook G4

MAC newbie here. I recently inherited a PowerBook G4, and I literally mean inherited. My father in law passed away last year. The problem I have is the laptop is going to be used for a a seasonal job in the next couple days. I need to add a printer, and I am unable to install the driver because I don't know his admin password. I have tried booting from the install disc to use the reset password utility; however, I get a black screen of death when I try to boot from the disc. I have tried mutliple OS X discs including one labeled for a G4 and a bsod every time. Any other suggestions, I thought I heard you can easily do this from the command line when booting into single user. Any tips on that? Thanks in advance. This laptop will be used at a Xmas tree lot which will be starting up very soon.
