I still get the apple logo for 30 seconds, then the stop sign, it doesn't boot up.
    For explanations see this:
About the screens you see when your Mac starts up

PS: Have you tried pressing and holding the option key at boot time?
And if so, does it give you any option for a boot icon to select???

is there a link to an explanation of the keyboard keys with symbols on? I don't know which is the option key, think I know the command key - but that's it.

You might find this link helpful.

I don't remember where you hail from, but this site covers most layouts in most languages.

I imagine that US (English); US (International); or UK (British) English will probably cover your needs.

Look carefully at the diagrams for Keys like Command, Option (previously Alt) and Control.

Wow, that's quite amazing and I guess you haven't needed to know, even though you've been a member here since late 2011.

Ian's charts should help, but I'm more surprised that not even Apple's Help seems to provide any info.

If you need more, just use google or go here:

After reading all of these posts I think that the only answer to your problem (short of purchasing a new install disk from apple) is to find a way to boot the device from another source.
Normally I would suggest a bootable installer created with Terminal or DiskMaker X or even a clone of the HDD but as you cannot boot up the device you cannot clone or create a bootable installer.
Because your Apple ID is not recognised you cannot use the online Reinstall OSX. Of course you should have confirmed that your Apple ID was valid and recognized before erasing the HDD but that's done now.
Do you have another Apple device? If so it may be possible to reset your user name and password with Apple which would allow you to use the online restore option.
Can you still boot up with the restore partition?
The only other option I can think of is to take the device to an Apple repairer. In most cases they will have another source they can use to boot up and erase the device but you may need proof of ownership.
I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.

I d.id change my password and had an Apple ID once again - Istarted mac up and pressed command and R. Great, I then had options come on screen. So I opted to reinstall Lion OS. Apple decided in its wisdom to think my password was wrong -it wasn't, but hey ho slowly getting there., all set Swapped password again, pressed install and a message came up saying that item was not available, please try again later. So I went to bed and I'll try again tomorrow. I'm pleased that there's light at the end of the tunnel - fingers crossed. Again, thanks, I would never have got this far without you guys. I'll post again later - I know you are all waiting, with bated breath,. to see if I get the mac working again 'night all.
