My question is simple. I heard that the combination of an ssd(main) and hdd(optical drive) on a macbook pro is going to slow down to the hdd speed. If this is the case, wouldn't it be wiser to replace only the existing hdd by an ssd?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

I am not a notebook person however I have always thought with cheaper and larger capacity SSD's becoming more readily available, the optimum result would be to place say a 1TB OWC SSD in the hard drive space and use that. Would you then need the platter drive in the optical drive position?

Have a read of this article on write speeds using this setup.

Why an OWC? They use their own 'Garbage Collection' and TRIM is not necessary. With Yosemite OS X.10 Apple made some KEXT Security changes affecting third party SSD's and TRIM.
