Question Has anyone else had this crashing issue?
I bought my 15" macbook pro in July of 2010. By March of 2011 my macbook would crash in the middle of using it. The screen would go black (but if you looked carefully you could see the desktop in the background), the fan shutdown and it sounded like it went to sleep. If the computer came back up on its own everything would remain as it was before it crashed, but the internet would be disconnected. Other times I had to manually reboot the computer because it was stuck like that. It would go days without doing this and then do it multiple times in a row.

After seven trips to the Apple store, 2 new logic boards and a new display, Apple decided to admit defeat, saying they were unsure of the issue and had never seen anything like this before. They replaced my laptop in May of 2011.

Up until tonight my new laptop has only had that issue occur twice, months apart. It has failed me twice tonight during a skype session with my friend. My screen went black, my webcam light was still on and we could still talk over microphone clearly, but he said my camera was frozen on his end. I had to reboot my computer both times to fix the issue.

    Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

I've never come across that issue. But for the fact it's happening across two machines I'd say it has to be software based. Something you've had installed on both Macs

I uninstalled the free virus protection my school gave me (Norton Symantec) and installed the free version of Avast and had it run an in-depth scan and it found 21 files with warnings and then a couple files infected with a trojan that the old virus scanner wasn't detecting (despite the fact that it was supposed to be monitoring all the time for viruses). The infected files couldn't be repaired and they didn't seem important, so I got rid of them. All that did was make my iphoto not up-to-date and unable to run, so I updated it and everything seems to be running fine so far.

Is it possible that both laptops had the same virus (I didn't think to change the virus protection last time, so it had the Symantec)? Wouldn't Apple have thought to check it for viruses? All they did was replace the logic board twice and the display once.

Neither one of your MBPs had a virus because there aren't any in the wild that can infect your Mac. Some malware yes, viruses no. Some folks say Norton AV for OS X causes more problems than it solves but not bad enough to make your screen black out. And the 21 warnings you received from Avast were likely false.

And the fact that your machine failed you twice during a Skype session probably has nothing to do with the previous problems. It's not unusual for that to happen during a Skype call especially if the connection is not good.
