Vertical lines across entire screen, then restart

I have no idea why my screen suddenly was filled with thin vertical lines (I don't remember any colors in particular.) I immediately unplugged it to move it to my desk and it immediately restarted and was fine (whew!!).

But I'm wondering what happened and why and if it might indicate trouble down the road.

Macbook Pro, Intel, running 10.6.8
