For some reason I am getting only the left channel audio when I attach my powerbook to speakers or headphones. . . any idea on how to fix this?

Go to system preferences and click sound. You will see a balance bar there. Put it in the middle and you should be good to go.

Is it fine with the internal speakers? Is it that way with just external speakers or Headphones? Is the plug on the cable to the speakers or phones all the way in the jack? Could be the jack. Check speed4tu's suggestion, but if the internal speakers both work, something else is wrong.
