Hi,

I have a Macbook 13", Aluminum, late 2008. Recently the sound stopped working. Both headphones and internal speakers. I brought it to the Apple store and the "genius" looked at it for a bit and then said that the sound card was fine and that it was a problem with the logic board. He said that it would not recognize the sound input and output jacks, so I left. But now thinking about, it seems like if that is the problem, the speakers should work, no?

Any thoughts?
TIA

The sound or audio chipset is integrated within the logic board. If that's defective, the only cure is to replace the entire logic board - just as the Apple tech told you. Since your machine is a 2008 model it may not be worthwhile to spend that kind of money unless you can do the work yourself. You can buy refurbished and pulled logic boards off eBay. It's up to you. If you go that route, make sure you get an exact replacement.

The step by step instructions on how to change one out can be found at iFixit: The free repair manual.

And... please do not use masked unacceptable language in these forums as they're read by folks of all ages. I edited out your language. Thanks.
