My daughter's iBook G-4 won't start up. When the start button is pressed you can hear the drive go into start-up mode & it continues to make a grinding start-up noise, but the Apple start -up sound never happens & the screen never come on.The grinding noise continues until you hold down the start-up button & then it stops. Please can anyone define the problem & how to get it to start up again. I thought it might have been a battery problem, so I replaced the battery as the old one wouldn't charge up & even when I left it charging overnight. there was only 1 green light continuing to flash when I checked the battery charge. Even with a new battery & the charger plugged in, it still does the same. Won't start up.
Would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions , Thanks, Sabusforms :(

Can you boot it from the restore CD by inserting the disc and pressing the C key on boot

This might seem a strange question, but was anything spilled on it? I had an issue here with mine where my cat threw up on it and by the time I caught it, it was damaged. Did what yours did.

Did it just stop working one day when you tried to boot it up?

Hi Louishen & Dtravis
7, thanks for the replies...Loiushen: My daughter bougt it on eBay some time ago & it didn't come with the original disks.
Dtravis 7: no nothing was spilled over the keyboard . She tried to turn it on one night & that's when the problem began. It just wouldn't start up although it makes the startup "grinding/Spinning " noise.
Thanks for both your interests though- much appreciated.
Maybe someone else will reply with a suggestion, hopefully, regards, Sabusforms

Hi Louishen, borrowed Restore disks from a friend & tried your suggestion. Put in Restore disk 1 & held down C key on start up. Still won't start even though continually makes h/drive start up noise. Now have new problem, it won't spit out friend's Restore disk, even when I hold down "eject disk" button. Only way to stop start up sound is to disconnect battery & charge cable.
Hope someone can help, regards, Sabusforms

Getting that Restore DVD out might be interesting if it will not really power on. Try this though, Hold down the mouse button right after you power it on and keep it down for a while. See if DVD pops out, If not that machine is really dead.

Hi again, Dennis. Thanks for the suggestion. Tried holding the mouse button on startup , unfortunately, it didn't work. It looks like the restore disk is not going to eject. So still have the same problem & now I have another one. Can't get my friend's disk out of the drive. Don't know what to do from here.
Help please anybody, if you have any other suggestions, regards,Sabusforms

Thanks to the 2 members, dtravis7 & Louishen for their kind suggestions. Much appreciated. After having no luck restarting iBook G-4 , I have weighed up all the factors & decided to scrap the ibook as I assume the motherboard has "given up the Ghost". Due to its age, the cost to have an Apple dealer investigate the problem, decided it would be more cost effective for my daughter to try to purchase a 2 nd hand MacBook on eBay. Will try to salvage the old h/drive & restore all her info , oics, etc. to the next unit .Thanks again to both of you, Sabusforms
