So I am planning to sell my 17 inch MBP very soon to replace it with the new 15 inch version, I am unfamiliar with Mac OSX so I was wondering if there was any way of backing up my information and apps and then restoring them on the new MBP without loosing any data what so ever? Also how do I format it to make it brand new for the buyer?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Thanks for the reply CWA, so time machine seems like a viable solution, but what about things like registration keys and so forth? Would those be backed up as well or would I have to dig those up again for apps like Microsoft Office for Mac?

The last time I migrated from one Mac to another by way of a backup, I believe my registration keys came right over. But I do recall that I had to reinstall Office 2008 once for that reason. However, if it's 2011, you should be fine.

Hi guys, so I went through the steps you linked me too CWA and it started up like brand new but all my stuff is still there! Microsoft office, steam, everything, I need to know how to remove all that stuff in one blow.

Assume you are talking about prepping your 17in MBP for sale.

Best IMO is to boot into your OS Disk and run Disk Utility.

Reformat the HD using Secure Erase (7 pass option) and then reinstall the OS.
