Macbook Pro 17" -- Largest hard drive I can install?
Hi everyone... new to this forum.

I have a 2 yr old Macbook Pro 17". I've already replaced the OEM hard drive with a 500gb but finding I need more room.

Is there a solid, fast, reliable 1TB that will fit in this machine? Here's my units serial number for specs:

I believe both Seagate and Western Digital now have a 1 TB drive that is only 9.5 MM thick. The only problem with the drives is that they are 5400 RPM. I imagine you would want something faster. In that case, the largest drives are 750 GB running at 7200 RPM.

So am I correct in assuming that as long as it is a 2.5" x 9.5mm thickness I'm good? WD, Seagate and Hitachi are all the same price... any preference?

I'm thinking go with the 750 which will give me 250 gb more storage and also a faster spin with a 7200.

I personally would go with either the Hitachi or WD 750 GB 7200 RPM drive rather than the slower 1 TB models. And yes, as long as you go for a drive of the correct dimensions you'll be fine.
