I need to remove the battery from my 2010 Macbook Pro, so I can replace the touchpad. There is a sticker on this battery that says "DO NOT REMOVE BATTERY".

My laptop is out of warranty, so that isn't an issue. Is there a technical reason why I can't simply unplug the battery and remove it?

thanks, Kevin

If you're out of warranty (and you need to replace the trackpad)...then I don't see any reason why you couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't remove the battery.

There are vendors out there selling replacement batteries for the "non-user replaceable" batteries in newer MacBooks/MacBooks Pros...and you certainly would have to remove the original battery for that...and many other repairs.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but how come apple says you've voided your warranty if you remove the battery?

One big reason might be that Apple considers the battery in a Unibody MacBook to be "non-user replaceable". Another reason may be that removing the battery is pretty major surgery.

Honestly, I think this is an example of Apple trying to "keep it in the family" and avoid having third parties making service parts for their machines. Essentially, they want you to come back to them for parts. Probably one of the reasons they won't license the MagSafe connector.

From a technical perspective, providing you have the right tri-wing bit, there's technically no reason you can't remove the battery. As far as violating the warranty goes... what they don't know won't hurt them.

I totally agree. Luckily I have a very old model Macbook Pro 3,2 and I just bought a non-OEM battery on Amazon. Just like cwa107 said, what they don't know won't void your warranty. If there are any stickers or something, just make sure you're very careful around those. ;P

remove battery permanently?

It would be easier for me to use my older MacBook with electricity only. I forget to keep it plugged in 0r leave it plugged in too long. What would happen to the computer if I the battery out?

MacBook 2009
OS X 10.10

Appreciate your help. Thanks

Be a scientist. Run an experiment and find out.;) If something undesirable happens…put the battery back in.:)

Just an FYI. There was a time (previously)…that Apple laptops would reduce the CPU speed to reduce power consumption if the computer was operated without a battery installed. Not sure if this still applies to newer Apple portable computers. Here'a an older article discussing it (from 2008). Unfortunately the Apple link in the article is no longer valid:
