I am trying to install 8gb of ram on my White Unibody Macbook. I have heard that it can be done, but am having trouble. Right now I am running 5gb because only one module will work.

I am running Lion.

I have tried every combination possible. In other words, both of the modules work and they both work in each of the slots (upper and lower), but both will not work at the same time. I have to install one of the 1gb modules in order for it to boot. If both 4gb modules are in it does the 1 beep repeatedly. Right now I'm running on 5gb and its SO FAST! I love it, but I feel kinda jipped since I payed for 8. Any ideas whats going on? Thanks! -Michael

Year and model of your white unibody MacBook? If it's the one I'm thinking of it will only accept 6 GB of memory.

Officially Apple says the maximum memory for your machine is 4 GB. However, Mactracker says that unofficially it can take 8 GB.

Where did you buy the memory from? And what kind did you buy - specs?

Not all memory modules are the same and Macs are extremely fussy about the memory. I would say off hand that your machine can probably run 8 GB of memory with the right modules.

Yeah, it looks like you bought the wrong memory. Send the modules back and get a refund. Then buy the second set of modules you linked to instead.

Your machine uses the slower memory not the 1333 MHZ type that you bought. Sometimes faster memory will work in slower slots but usually not in a Mac. As I stated, Macs are very fussy about using the exact memory.

Thanks for your help! I will give that a try.

Got the Kingston, and it works great! thanks for your help!

Sounds great! Computers like it (especially Mac's) when the correct ram is used!:)

That's the wrong memory for your machine. Return it and get this instead:

2 x 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. (4 GB modules)

Yes, that's the correct memory for your MacBook. Your model MacBook can accept up to 8 GB (2 x 4 GB modules).
