So I have a Macbook Pro 15' Unibody A1286, The screen has gone black but Images still can faintly be seen by shining a flashlight on the screen. The Apple symbol on the back of the lid is also not lit when it should be! Everything works perfectly when plugged into a external monitor! So I can only assume its a back-lighting problem of some sort. I have also already swapped screens with a water damaged MB I had and I continue to experience the exact same problem as the original screen. Regardless of the fact that the swapped screen came from a water damaged MB what are the chances that the two different screens are experiencing the same problems! Any and all help would be appreciated...HELP Me get to the bottom of this Forum!!!!

That the symptom of a bad inverter. If both displays are doing the same exact thing, then you know it's not likely to be the backlight itself. That leaves the inverter which converts DC to AC to power the backlight.

Its a MacBook Pro (15-inch, A1286) Has a LED-backlit display, I was hoping that it was a inverter at first but the LCD LED-backlit's don't need the AC/DC inverter. Not sure if it was from the beginning of the uni-body design that they started using the LED-backlit's but that's whats on mine. I just don't know what to do here any help would be appreciated for sure!

OK, good to know that it's LED backlighted. You're correct, no inverter. In that case I would probably say it's a bad video cable or power cable from the logic board to the display. Since an external display works OK, that's about the only thing it could be.

I'm having the same problem with my a1286 I bought a new lcd that didn't fix it. replaced the cable that didn't fix it. The hdmi output to tv works perfectly. Any other solutions? Do these have invertors inside the hinge? Does anyone have the correct part number for the inverter?
