Not sure where this goes, but I ran Onyx on my Mac and it told me I need to repair my volume by putting the OSX disk in and everything.

If I repair it will there be a difference in performance or something? Last time I tried to repair my disk, my hard drive crashed and I had to get a new one put in.

If I do the repair, do I have to have everything backed up? I don't have a hard drive and would hate to loose everything.

I can't recommend that you go grab a drive to back up your data strongly enough. They're cheap - and if you're in a hurry - you can just run out to Best Buy or Staples or some place similar and get a USB drive. It's just good standard practice - and all the more so if you're getting this kind of advice from Onyx.

You say you already lost your data once - then why even play with fire again? - Go back up your data then you'll feel comfortable performing the rest of the troubleshooting or maintenance tasks you're attempting to undertake.

It's always a good idea to have things backed up, just as a matter of course, but repairing the volume shouldn't lose any data, depending on what is needed, but you only lose things if you erase usually, and that's a different scenario to repairing the volume.
I would run disk utility from your install disc, and check the drive using that, to see if it says the same. If so, repair it.
As for performance, well it should indeed improve if there is a need for repair.
