Hey everyone, I have an issue with my Macbook that is confusing me. It shuts down all of the sudden when I am running on battery power. The battery indicator is fully charged when this happens and my Macbook is using battery power. Any ideas what might be wrong? Unfortunately, my computer is out of warranty too. . . .go figure!

How old is the battery? It might be faulty and is not giving you an accurate reading on how much battery life you have left.

Does this happen when you leave it pluged in?

Open up System Profiler (/Applications/Utilities) > Hardware > Power. What does it say under "Health Information"?

Thanks for the replies.

It says Cycle count "258:". Condition "Good". To my knowledge, this doesn't seem to happen when the computer is plugged in. I haven't had the opportunity to do any extensive testing at this time. I just know that the battery indicator practically reads 3/4 full and the computer completely shuts down as if the battery had been depleted. After each episode, if I plug the computer in and push the power button, the computer boots up as if it had been turned completely off.

Any ideas?

Update: I just downloaded the free app "Coconut Battery 2.6.6." and checked my battery performance. Everything checks out good!

Any additional ideas? Thanks.

Update: I reset the SMC and PRAM and when I rechecked the power tab in system profiler, it stated "check battery" and under charging, it stated "no".

Update: I rechecked the battery and restarted the computer. Cycle count is 258 and Condition: Check battery. I guess I need a new battery already!

The cycle count is not high!
Old Macs 500 is high
New Macs 1000 is high

After resetting the SMC and PRM it seems to be working okay. I haven't had any issues with it shutting down spontaneously like it did before. Under system profiler, it still states "check battery" though. I am at 262 cycles now and it seems to be working.
