Hello everyone,

I just recently opened my notebook because the fan had been spinning loudly for some time. I cleaned out all of the interior dust and put it back together. Now it's still making the same noises. Right now it's running at 3207 RPM and 146 F 62C, and I'm only using Firefox. Does anyone have any potential solutions?

Thanks in advance,

John

You probably should have taken it to apple in case the fan was faulty. By opening it, you might have void the warranty. I suggest you call them and ask where you can go from here

Thanks for the advice. My macbook is about 4 years old now so the warranty is long gone, and I figured it would be better to try this myself than pay at least $90 just for the macstore (which could potentially be going to a new notebook if necessary) to look at what's wrong.

The fan spinning at high RPMs could be due to a faulty thermal heat sensor or it could be caused by a logic board fault. Also, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)? If not, do that first as the SMC also has to do with controlling fan speeds.

If that doesn't help, go to iFixit: The free repair manual and look up the take apart instructions for your MB and also the replacement parts which are available. You may be able to change out the heat sensor yourself.

Regards.
