I'm ready to switch from "Brand X" to a Mac. I'm wondering what is a fair price for a used Macbook Pro 17", 3-4GB RAM, 120+HD. Is it possible to get Apple Care on a used machine.

For a fair price check mac2sell.net.

The prices they have listed are imho - fair - as starting points and depending on what extras may be offered. Do not buy one without the OSX discs. And don't be conned into paying extra for any software the seller is not giving you the disc for. He's charging you for what in essence becomes pirated software when you use it as they're keeping the discs to install on their next machine.

It will be hard finding machines for those prices though. Most Mac owners feel their machines are worth way more than they really are. When looking at 1,2 and 3 yr old machines, it's going to be tuff to find one that is reasonably priced.

Applecare can be added to a machine up to 12 months from date of original purchase.

My advice - look at new ones or check out the refurbs at the Apple store. you'll not be able to tell the difference from a new one and they'll come with Apple's full warranty.
