Connecting MacBook Pro to TV using HDMI to DVI cable

Hi, I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my HD TV using a Belkin HDMI to DVI Video Cable. I connected the DVI port to my MacBook, and the HDMI port to my TV.

Now when I change the source on my TV, I get a full picture of the background image on my laptop. However, for some reason it's treating my TV like a dual monitor. I bring up a video on my laptop and don't see it on the TV- but when I move the video to the far left, it slowly appears on my TV. When I move the mouse pointer to the far right on my laptop, it spills over onto my TV. I want what appears on my laptop to appear on my TV. Is there a setting or something that needs to be changed in order to achieve this? Thanks in advance for your help, it is much appreciated.

Yup. Just go into System Preferences>Displays> and turn on Mirroring (a little check box).

Now if I may follow up, that allows for the video to play and not the sound. The person who helped me at the Apple store told me this, and said I needed audio cables to get the sound to play through my TV. So I purchased a Belkin Stereo Cable that has two color-coated connectors on one end and a 3.5mm plug to RCA on the other. I plug the 3.5mm plug into my headphone jack on my MacBook, but I'm not sure where I plug in the two color coated connectors. Every where I try, the sound doesn't work. There are no audio inputs next to the HDMI input on my TV, only next to DVI and PC plugs. I've tried plugging them into the AV-IN audio plugs on my TV, to no avail. Is it possible to get the audio to play this way, or do I need to purchase a different cord? Thanks again for your help!

You are doing it correctly. There must be a spot on your TV for the connectors. There is a spot for the two connectors next to the HDMI input on my TV. How old is your TV.

I would double check your TV and look at the manual. Can you call customer support?

I know it sounds odd to say that after you have done it, but my mom, dad, sister and brother-in-law insisted my parents had no USB input on the computer. 9 hour drive later, I showed them they were wrong.

Either look in the manual for "connections" and see where it tells you to plug in a DVI device when using HDMI or provide your TV's make and model number.

Some TVs do not have the capability of using a separate audio port with HDMI. Some require the standard RCA cables and some use a stereo mini-plug.
