Can I remove the firewire cable from the Mac with power still on, or do I need to turn the computer off? I've already removed it once and detected a burning smell from the cable connector. Has me a bit concerned. Thanks.

Panasonic PV GS150 camcorder. Worked fine transferring. Just the electrical smell when I unplugged from the Mac. Has worked fine since. Just wondering if I need to shutdown before unplugging. I understand that the firewire can be plugged in when the machine is already ON.

You shouldn't need to turn off - I don't with my Sony PDx-10. However, they are a few issues with certain Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders having their ports burnt out while using firewire. Maybe have a search on the web about your model number to see if it's affected.

Firewire is Hot swappable but i think always a good plan to right click and choose Eject before unplugging.
