The new whitebook looked very nice online, but as soon as I stepped foot into the apple store, their problem immediately stood out! The macbooks finish is similar to that of the 5th gen ipod 30gb. They have been out on display for less than 2 days at my apple store, yet they all had lots of scratches...not heavy ones, just faint ones, but all over...just like the ipod. I wish they would have made the whole thing similar to the area around the keys, which is a matte finish...similar to the mbp's. I was also bummed out with the new mouse...I don't even start with that one! They did good with the iMac though! They should rename the white macbook the "Scratch Magnet.":|

Thanks for the quick review of the new Apple products!. I haven't had a chance to get to my local Apple store to check things out...but I'm excited to take a look at the new 27" iMac!:)

BTW...did you happen to notice if the new "Magic Mouse" was in stock? I know that another Mac-Forums member was wondering when the store would have them.

Thanks again,

- Nick

To be fair, think of all the traffic those new machines would see at an Apple store, especially with people who would care less about the machine since it isn't theirs. I'm pretty sure that if my MB was a floor demo, it would look 10x worse than it does now.

Sounds like the very FIRST purchase someone should make that purchases one of these is some sort of protective case or sleeve. I know that this sort of defeats the point of getting a nice new pretty laptop...but maybe a clear case would be a good compromise.

Of course the laptops are so new...there may not be any protective cases/sleeves available yet for those folks that would want them!:(

I thought the new MacBook had a Unibody design like the MBP, only white.

Am I wrong??

It's not only the exterior of the macbook that has that shiny gloss, its the WHOLE thing, including the palm rest area! The only part that isn't shiny is the small edge bezel around the keys and the bottom of the macbook which is a rubber material.

Sur3Mac,
You are correct, but it's plastic unibody, not aluminum.

If that's what it looks like after 2 days, I wonder what they will look like in 1 year....never mind...I don't think I want to know

pigoo3,
They were all sold out online, but they had plenty at my closest store.

I noticed something similar as well. I was at my local Apple store today and the whole palm-rest on the new macbook looks terrible. I played with it for a few minutes, and if you type for longer than, say 30 seconds or so, your palms stick to the palm-rest.

It's such a minor complaint, and I appreciate the upgrades they've made to the systems, but the exterior design is very "eh" in my opinion. I'll be spending an extra 100 dollars and getting a 13" Pro through my education discount, at least those ones have cases and Invisible Shield's already available for them.
