I've been using my Compaq Presario for 5 years now and though a bit slow, it still gets the basic job done for most things.

Wondering how long you've had your Mac and how it's held up over the years maintenance wise? Thank you.

I've had mine for a month now and it's still good, no duh! (kidding);D

All kidding aside, if you clean (preferably with a can of comp. air) the insides of your mac like twice a year I think you're good.

The answer to this question depends...what if someone has 5 laptops (used to be 6 before I sold one)!;D

I bought my Macbook in December 2006. After a hard drive and RAM upgrade along with the recent Snow Leopard upgrade, it's running faster than the day I got it :)

My MacBook is about 10 months old and is PERFECT - I love it!

My previous MacBook was with me for 2 years before I got the current one - it was a plastic one and in that time I had to have the HDD, the wrist 'pad' and the bottom casing replaced (all under Apple Care). My mum now owns my previous MacBook and it seems absolutely fine now. Although she doesn't take it as many places as I used to. In fact I think it spends 90% of its time on a desk and the other 10% of its time on a table thats about 50 meters from the desk :)

Even with the HDD failure and the cosmetic damage I still loved the other MacBook - and still do :p - the new unibody macs are amazing though - I imagine the chances of cosmetic failure are far less likely on this one!

I've had my Macbook 13'' for 3 years and besides a couple of hardware problems, it runs like new. Hasn't slowed down at all. I don't plan on changing it for the next year or two.

The hardware problems were not something really out of the ordinary. I had to replace my superdrive under warranty after that update a couple of years ago was released that messed up some drives. Then my HD died and replaced it on my own very cheaply. Now I'm having problems with the power/charging system but I suspect it could be because of the battery being old and needing replacement or the magsafe board connector coming loose inside, I don't think it's anything major at the moment.

I would definitely reccommend Apple laptops, just keep in mind that they're not perfect as some would like you to believe and problems are bound to happen. But if you're worried about it becoming slow with time, you shouldn't at all in my experience. I am amazed at how fast it runs after 3 years of using it pretty much 24/7. This is the first computer I've had no desire to change after a few months from buying it.

My macbook was 3 years old in aug. I had one hard drive failure. I am now running snow leopard. Runs great. ( i hope saying that is not the kiss of death) Original battery at 60%. Considering a new mac mini. Then maybe a new computer every three years. Keeping each one 6 years. But never having one machine more than 3 years old. Having one laptop and one desktop.

I have a Packard bell for 5 years before my 2 week old macbook pro. From friends experience, i find that a Mac will be up to date for longer due to cheap OS updates and whatnot. Another factor in the time a Mac lasts is AppleCare, this means that problems can be fixed/replaced rather than ignored due to the cost.

My MBP 15" is just a year old.. Everything except the battery is perfect. I tried calibrating it a few times (charging it all the way, then rinsing it) Still doesnt work for me. Battery gives an hour's life. Everything else is just awesome. Waiting to get Snow Leopard

My battery gives normally gives me 3, and sometimes 4 hours, and our computers are roughly the same age.

Having said that, I don't use my notebook on battery power that often and only have 40 odd cycles on it.

For the fun of it. I still have my original PowerBook 170. It's 18 years old and still works perfectly. Been a real work horse! :D

I also have an old Powerbook 540c from 1994. I upgraded it to a Power PC CPU and it's still ticking away.

well i have a r32 in pieces (dead 5 years ago), compaq ( dead about 2 month ago), dell 1150 freezing at boot about a month ago(not sure on that one yet). r40e needs a keyboard and cpu fan (should work), just got a r40 15", used the keyboard from the r32, needs new battery. 13"mb cracked KB and bezel, screen flicker, think it needs inverter? (1 month).. lots of fun, from now on the car is getting the attention..

My unibody MacBook 2GHz is 6 months old... it still runs like a dream, and I got it refurbished. She's a sexy little baby, I'll tell ya that much. And speedy.

There's some old model names I haven't heard in a while!!;)

I had a 540c...but sold it a long time ago. The oldest laptop I currently have is a 1996 era Powerbook 1400.

My MacBook is over two years old, and bought it as a refurb last summer. Still runs and looks like brand new (after HD, RAM, and SL upgrades over time).

This is how it looks like in my dorm room:
