Not at all, you have the right, as a consumer, to deny the same product due to things such as the fire and demand a better quality item, or you can get all your money back. That's why I said that.

Do you really think there's a difference in quality between the two machines? Just because something costs more, doesn't mean better quality. The difference is in the feature set in this case.

Exactly. It's the same MagSafe connector in all the Macbook and MBP models. There is not a Deluxe version of the MagSafe.

What has me more concerned is this fire happened after he got his Mac back from being repaired. I wonder if something was done internally that (a mistake) that caused the burning issue.

Glad they took care of you and you were not seriously injured. And thanks for posting the photos. I'll definitely be paying attention to my Magsafe connector from here on out.

I have to say the same as Christina. No words... except,

HOPE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO MY MACBOOK !!!

Keep an eye on the port as I mentioned previously, and you likely never will.

I'd be willing to bet something shorted that connector out, and judging by the way my magsafe connector tends to collect debris, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Apple really needs to have some kind of warning about this clearly printed near the port.

After my house fire 8 years ago, I have always been careful when it comes to anything that could be a potential fire hazard so I discconect the magsafe at night. This sort of thing shouldnt happen though.

be sure to update the thread with details.

Well, sorry to hear you got such a bad luck that your MBP got burnt, however it's so nice coz they give you new machine. I'm thinking beside that, they should offer a free Apple product to you like they did to me, once when they kept my MBP almost 5 weeks. They replaced the logic board due to the graphic card issue. They gave me an ipod shuffle free.

I hope they will call you and talk with you about the free offer. Good luck.

What happened in the end?

Did Apple find out why this happened?

True - but it would be nice to find out what happened in the end. i.e. Did Apple find the route cause, and what machine did he get in exchange.

I have to say that I'm glad I saw this thread. I wasn't aware that there was any issue at all but these stories scared me so bad I took a look at my MagSafe power cord and it is horribly frayed! I'm so glad I didn't go a day longer leaving it plugged in all the time. I'm going to the Apple store right now to see if they'll replace this.

Follow up:

The Genius I met with said that even though my Macbook Pro is out of warranty, they could replace the power adapter for free. So I definitely recommend that everyone checks their cord right now to see if it's a potential hazard!

Folks stuff like this should not happen at all, ever. I just got my MBP and I am now worried about this. Apple need to take a look at this and figure out what happened. They need some explaining or a recall or something. This is really serious stuff, anytime it involves fire. One incident is one incident too many.

I guarantee that they have by now. Smoke is a major concern for those of us in the hardware field, and despite the manufacturing company I do not know of ANY that do not perform a thorough root cause analysis on smoked product. Period.

I hope so. I just sent them an email anyway to find out if they know about this and if they have done an investigation and what was the cause. I sent them the link to this thread.

I can tell you that the company I work for... unless it was YOUR equipment, you'd never hear the FA results. For what it's worth, every piece of electronics you own is subject to similar faults. Worse still, the wiring in your house probably has higher risk
